Western Dining Etiquette

The Art of Fine Dining

Understanding proper cutlery placement and usage elevates any dining experience from ordinary to extraordinary.

The Finished Position

Place knife and fork parallel at 4:20 position on the plate. This signals to the server that you have finished your meal.

The Rest Position

When taking a break, place fork on left, knife on right, forming an inverted V on the plate. This indicates you're not finished.

Continental Style

Keep fork in left hand, tines down, and knife in right hand throughout the meal. Cut and eat without switching hands.

Place Setting Order

Work from outside in. Use outermost cutlery for first course, moving inward with each subsequent course.

Holding Techniques

Hold knife like a pencil with thumb on spine. Fork rests on middle finger with index finger on top for stability.

Soup Spoon Etiquette

Spoon away from you. Never blow on hot soup. Tip bowl away slightly to get the last spoonful quietly.
